What Is “Conservation Framing”?

Conservation framing is the techniques and the types of materials used to “preserve and protect” your monetarily or sentimentally valuable artwork from the environment. Since you made an investment in the artwork it is advisable to insure the longevity of your artwork by framing it correctly.

Everything that touches the artwork should be 100% acid free materials. If not, acid burns or stains may occur in time when non-acid free material touches your artwork. Your artwork should never be glued or permanently attached to the backing board. Acid-free hinges or corners should be used on an acid-free backing board so that your artwork can be removed at the time for cleaning or reframing.

Artwork on acid-free paper is porous and may not lay flat when mounted, so a ripple or wavy effect might occur, which is normal for good quality paper. Your artwork should never be cut or altered if it is an original or limited edition, and must be able to expand or contract without construction due to humidity in the air. Acid-free mats or spacers should be used to lift the glass above the artwork to create an air space so moisture can dry up and not go into the artwork.

The glazing used should have some “ultra violet” protection to prevent light from fading your artwork. However, even if we took all precautions to preserve your artwork, the environment you put your framed picture in will have a major effect on its longevity. It is advisable to take a good look at your framed artwork every 6 months to see if any problems are occurring.

If what you are framing is replaceable or did not cost very much, then by all means frame it more simply. Frame Masters has monthly specials on selected frames that are 50% OFF and are great for posters and photographs. Other specials are also available for more custom artwork.
